1. Why we decided to create IP Analysis Report?
The medical and health care (healthcare) business has been experiencing innovative growth in recent years, and the medical and health care industry is expected to grow to nearly seven times the size of the current automobile industry by 2032 (Nikkei BP). This growth will be supported by “medical/health x technology (health tech)” centered on ICT (information and communication technology), and medical devices (including software) are said to play a central role in this growth.
The medical device market, which supports the medical industry, is expected to be worth 40-50 trillion yen(25~33 billion dollars) worldwide by 2020, forming a huge market. Further growth is expected in the future due to the aging of the population and the expansion of international demand from emerging countries, as well as the continuous introduction of new medical devices in line with technological advances.
Looking at medical device manufacturers, the global medical device industry is dominated by European and U.S. manufacturers with sales exceeding 1 trillion yen, such as Medtronic, Johnson & Johnson, Philips, Siemens, and Stryker, with Japanese companies such as Olympus, Fujifilm, and Terumo also doing well. Japanese companies such as Olympus, Fujifilm, and Terumo are also doing well.
On the other hand, in recent years, Chinese manufacturers such as Micro Tech (南微医学科技股分有限公司) and Ping An (中国平安保険集团) have been growing rapidly, and many manufacturers, venture companies, start-ups, and small and medium-sized companies from different industries such as electronics, automobile parts, chemicals, optics, and pharmaceuticals are also entering the medical device industry.
The medical device industry is also attracting new entrants. As the medical device industry is a growing industry, various companies, universities, hospitals, and research institutes in Global are expected to create innovative medical devices and services using next-generation “medical/health x technology (health tech)” one after another.
